What is stout beer?
Stout is a black ale with a creamy crumb. Alcohol percentages vary widely depending on the variety. The beer is characterized by a multitude of variation. We distinguish bitter, sweet as well as barrel aged stouts. Characteristic of this beer is the roasted taste due to the roasted malt.
This beer will be able to surprise you every time. The possibilities are endless. A stout can range from a chamois-sweet liquid dessert to a sophisticated, barrel-aged stout.
Where does stout beer come from?
Stout beer saw the light of day in 18th-century London. It was the stronger brother of the then immensely popular porter beer. At the time, it was a real thirst quencher, appreciated by workmen who loved its rich flavor. Porter and stout beers were also considerably cheaper than other beers.
The popularity of stout continued to grow and more and more breweries introduced their own version. This included Arthur Guinness, who introduced a dry Irish stout. That remains to this day one of the most successful beer brands in the world.
The taste of stout
The color of stout, we can agree on: black. In the flavors, however, there are many variations. The base can be heavy and bitter, but also sultry and sweeter. Depending on the origin, you will find diverse accents.
– An American stout is traditionally slightly hoppier in flavor than other stout beers. You will find aromas of chocolate and coffee in it.
– In turn, the so-called Oatmeal stout from England is much less bitter in taste. The added oatmeal provides a blissfully smooth finish.
– The widely known Dry Irish stout has a very toasty character.
– Milk stout, lactose is added for a sweet touch with hints of caramel.
Imperial stout and pastry stout
Last but not least: the Russian imperial stout. This was originally brewed from England for the Russian market. It is the darkest and heaviest variety in the list, with an alcohol content of 9% or more. The flavor is complex and tends more toward the sweet side.
The imperial stout is currently the most popular variety among modern craft brewers. Since its export to the United States in the 1980s, there has been plenty of experimentation with this type of beer. For us, this makes it the most interesting and exciting variety among stout beers.
A special place within the imperial stout family is reserved for the so-called pastry stouts. These liquid desserts have stout as their base, to which the most diverse ingredients are added. Vanilla, chili, coffee, maple, marshmallow, or just everything together. The possibilities are endless: anything goes in a pastry stout specialty. And that is precisely what makes them so special.
