IPA beer, or: India Pale Ale, is one of the most popular beer styles today. The difference from regular beers, is in the amount of hops used. An IPA is coppery and bitter, but varies in aroma from spicy to fruity or floral - and everything in between. Due to its enormous popularity, there are a lot of flavors and sub-styles on the market. Let this refreshing beer surprise you - there is a lot to discover!

What is IPA?
IPA has a long history. Legend has it that in the late 18th century, a London brewer wanted to export his Pale Ale to India. To get through that long overseas trip, more hops were added to the beer. Hoppy beers were already very popular in England, and India Pale Ale was promoted as a beer for the wealthier class.
In the 1970s, IPA got a second life: it was experimented with vigorously by American craft breweries. They drew inspiration from old beer styles that had fallen out of fashion. More and more variations and sub-styles appeared. Because of this growing popularity of IPA beers, over the years just about every brewery included them in their assortment. This only encouraged smaller (micro) breweries to further develop this type of beer in a creative way.
The taste of IPA beer
So what makes IPA beer so interesting is the enormous variety of flavors and aromas. American IPAs evolved in terms of flavor to become increasingly hoppy. Not only the bitterness, but also the complexity makes an IPA just as interesting. Depending on the hop variety, the beer takes on a deep aroma of citrus or tropical fruit, for example. To get the most out of the hops, new techniques such as dryhopping have been developed. This involves adding extra hops to the wort after boiling. This ensures an extra fruity aroma and deliciously refreshing beer.
Types of IPA beer
Since IPA beer got its second chance in the 1970s, it is now the trademark of craft brewers worldwide. They put their own stamp on it, so the variations are endless. Here we list the main types of IPA beer for you.
– The New England IPA or NEIPA saw the light of day in New England, more specifically Vermont. However, a New England IPA does not necessarily have to be brewed there: it was recognized as a distinct beer style. A NEIPA is characterized by juicy fruit flavors, a smooth mouthfeel and creamy body.
– Double IPAs or DIPAs (also called Imperial IPAs) are a stronger, very hoppy variant of IPAs that typically have an alcohol content of at least 7%.
– Triple IPAs take it up a notch, with extra lots of hops and an alchol alcohol content of 10% or more.
– Black IPA (or BIPA) is a recent variant. Although still a true IPA, this one is darker in color. This is due to the use of roasted malts, which also lightly impart their typical aroma.
– The Session IPA is a lighter IPA variant with a lower alcholate percentage (about 4%). Nevertheless, such a session IPA can have a distinct flavor and fresh aroma. A perfect thirst quencher!
